ܘܟܕ ܫܠܡ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܡܐܡܪ ܠܫܐܘܠ ܢܦܫܗ ܕܝܘܢܬܢ ܢܩܦܬ ܠܢܦܫܗ ܕܕܘܝܕ ܘܪܚܡܗ ܝܘܢܬܢ ܐܝܟ ܢܦܫܗ

When he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

ܘܕܒܪܗ ܫܐܘܠ ܒܝܘܡܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܘܠܐ ܫܒܩܗ ܠܡܗܦܟ ܠܒܝܬ ܐܒܘܗܝ
'bwhy lbyth lmhpk shbqh wl' hw bywm' sh'wl wdbrh
Saul took him that day, and wouldn’t let him go home to his father’s house any more.

ܘܐܩܝܡܘ ܝܘܢܬܢ ܘܕܘܝܕ ܩܝܡܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܪܚܡ ܗܘܐ ܝܘܢܬܢ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܐܝܟ ܢܦܫܗ

Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

ܘܫܠܚ ܝܘܢܬܢ ܦܪܝܣܐ ܕܥܠܘܗܝ ܘܝܗܒܗ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܘܡܐ̈ܢܐ ܕܥܠܘܗܝ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܣܝܦܗ ܘܩܫܬܗ ܘܗܡܝܢܗ

Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David with his clothing, even including his sword, his bow, and his sash.

ܘܢܦܩ ܗܘܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܐܝܟܐ ܕܡܫܕܪ ܗܘܐ ܠܗ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܙܟܐ ܗܘܐ ܘܐܩܝܡܗ ܫܐܘܠ ܥܠ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܩܪ̈ܒܬܢܐ ܘܫܦܪ ܒܥܝܢ̈ܝ ܥܡܐ ܘܐܦ ܒܥܝܢ̈ܝ ܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ ܕܫܐܘܠ

David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely; and Saul set him over the men of war. It was good in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.

ܘܗܘܐ ܕܟܕ ܐܬܘ ܟܕ ܗܦܟ ܕܘܝܕ ܟܕ ܩܛܠܗ ܠܦܠܫܬܝܐ ܢܦܩ ܢܫ̈ܐ ܡܢ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܩܘܪ̈ܝܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܠܡܫܒܚܘ ܒܪ̈ܒܝܥܐ ܠܐܘܪܥܗ ܕܫܐܘܠ ܡܠܟܐ ܒ̈ܦܠܓܐ ܘܒܨ̈ܨܠܐ ܘܒܚܕܘܬܐ

As they came, when David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul with tambourines, with joy, and with instruments of music.

ܘܡܥܢܝ̈ܢ ܗ̈ܘܝ ܢܫ̈ܐ ܘܓܚ̈ܟܢ ܘܐܡܪ̈ܢ ܩܛܠ ܫܐܘܠ ܒܐ̈ܠܦܐ ܘܕܘܝܕ ܒܪ̈ܒܘܬܐ
brbwth' wdwyd b'lp' sh'wl qTl w'mrn wgkhkn nsh' hwy wmenyn
The women sang to one another as they played, and said, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”

ܘܐܬܚܡܬ ܫܐܘܠ ܛܒ ܘܐܬܐܒܫ ܒܥܝ̈ܢܘܗܝ ܦܬܓܡܐ ܗܢܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܝܗܒ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܪ̈ܒܘܬܐ ܘܠܝ ܝܗܒ ܐ̈ܠܦܐ ܘܬܘܒ ܕܝܠܗ ܗܝ ܡܠܟܘܬܐ
mlkwth' hy dylh wthwb 'lp' yhb wly rbwth' ldwyd yhb w'mr hn' pthgm' beynwhy w'th'bsh Tb sh'wl w'thkhmth
Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have credited David with ten thousands, and they have only credited me with thousands. What can he have more but the kingdom?”

ܘܫܪܝ ܫܐܘܠ ܠܡܣܩܪܗ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܡܢ ܗ̇ܘ ܝܘܡܐ

Saul watched David from that day and forward.

ܘܗܘܐ ܡܢ ܒܬܪ ܝܘܡ̈ܬܐ ܘܐܨܠܚܬ ܪܘܚܗ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܒܝܫܬܐ ܥܠ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܐܬܢܒܝ ܒܓܘ ܒܝܬܗ ܘܕܘܝܕ ܢܩ̇ܫ ܩܕܡܘܗܝ ܐܝܟ ܕܟܠ ܝܘܡ ܘܡܘܪܢܝܬܐ ܒܐܝܕܗ ܕܫܐܘܠ

On the next day, an evil spirit from God came mightily on Saul, and he prophesied in the middle of the house. David played with his hand, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand;

ܘܫܕܐ ܫܐܘܠ ܡܘܪܢܝܬܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܐܡܚܐ ܒܕܘܝܕ ܘܒܐܣܬܐ ܘܐܬܟܪܟ ܕܘܝܕ ܡܢ ܩܕܡܘܗܝ ܬܪ̈ܬܝܢ ܙܒܢܝ̈ܢ
zbnyn thrthyn qdmwhy mn dwyd w'thkrk wb'sth' bdwyd 'mkh' w'mr mwrnyth' sh'wl wshd'
and Saul threw the spear, for he said, “I will pin David to the wall!” David escaped from his presence twice.

ܘܕܚܠ ܫܐܘܠ ܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܕܘܝܕ ܡܛܠ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܗܘܐ ܥܡܗ ܘܡܢ ܫܐܘܠ ܥܒܪ

Saul was afraid of David, because Yahweh was with him, and had departed from Saul.

ܘܐܦܪܩܗ ܫܐܘܠ ܡܢ ܠܘܬܗ ܘܥܒܕܗ ܠܗ ܪܒ ܐܠܦܐ ܘܢܦܩ̇ ܗܘܐ ܘܥܐ̇ܠ ܩܕܡ ܥܡܐ

Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

ܘܗܘܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܒܟܠܗܝܢ ܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܗ ܣܟܘܠܬܢ ܘܡܪܝܐ ܥܡܗ
emh wmry' skwlthn 'wrkhthh bklhyn dwyd whw'
David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and Yahweh was with him.

ܘܚܙܐ ܫܐܘܠ ܕܣܟܘܠܬܢ ܗܘ ܘܛܒ ܘܕܚܠ ܡܢ ܩܕܡܘܗܝ
qdmwhy mn wdkhl wTb hw dskwlthn sh'wl wkhz'
When Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he stood in awe of him.

ܘܟܠܗ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܝܗܘܕܐ ܪܚܡܘ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܡܛܠ ܕܗܘ ܢܦܩ̇ ܗܘܐ ܘܥܐܠ ܩܕܡܝܗܘܢ
qdmyhwn we'l hw' npq dhw mTl ldwyd rkhmw wyhwd' 'ysryl wklh
But all Israel and Judah loved David; for he went out and came in before them.

ܘܐܡܪ ܫܐܘܠ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܗܐ ܒܪܬܝ ܩܫܝܫܬܐ ܢܕܒ ܐܬܠܝܗ̇ ܠܟ ܐܢܬܬܐ ܒܪܡ ܗܘܝ ܠܝ ܪܒ ܚܝܠܐ ܘܐܬܟܬܫ ܒܩܪ̈ܒܘܗܝ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܘܫܐܘܠ ܐܡܪ ܠܐ ܬܗܘܐ ܒܗ ܐܝܕܝ ܐܠܐ ܬܗܘܐ ܒܗ ܐܝܕܐ ܕܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ

Saul said to David, “Behold, my elder daughter Merab. I will give her to you as wife. Only be valiant for me, and fight Yahweh’s battles.” For Saul said, “Don’t let my hand be on him, but let the hand of the Philistines be on him.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܫܐܘܠ ܡ̇ܢ ܐܢܐ ܘܡܢܐ ܥܒܕܬ ܘܡܢܐ ܐܢܘܢ ܚܝܝ̈ ܘܫܪܒܬܗ ܕܐܒܝ ܒܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܕܒܪܬܗ ܕܡܠܟܐ ܐܣܒ
'sb dmlk' dbrthh b'ysryl d'by wshrbthh khyy 'nwn wmn' ebdth wmn' 'n' mn lsh'wl dwyd w'mr
David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my life, or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?”

ܘܗܘܐ ܙܒܢܐ ܠܡܬܠ ܠܢܕܒ ܒܪܬ ܫܐܘܠ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܘܗܝ ܐܬܝܗܒܬ ܠܥܙܪܐܝܠ ܕܡܢ ܡܚܘܠܐ ܐܢܬܬܐ
'nthth' mkhwl' dmn lezr'yl 'thyhbth why ldwyd sh'wl brth lndb lmthl zbn' whw'
But at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David, she was given to Adriel the Meholathite as wife.

ܘܪܚܡܬ ܡܠܟܠ ܒܪܬ ܫܐܘܠ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܘܚܘܝܘ ܠܫܐܘܠ ܘܫܦܪ ܦܬܓܡܐ ܒܥܝܢ̈ܘܗܝ
beynwhy pthgm' wshpr lsh'wl wkhwyw ldwyd sh'wl brth mlkl wrkhmth
Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved David; and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.

ܘܐܡܪ ܫܐܘܠ ܐܬܠܝܗ̇ ܠܗ ܘܬܗܘܐ ܠܗ ܬܘܩܠܬܐ ܕܬܗܘܐ ܒܗ ܐܝܕܐ ܕܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܫܐܘܠ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܒܬܪ̈ܬܝܗܝܢ ܬܗܘܐ ܠܝ ܚܬܢܐ ܝܘܡܢܐ
ywmn' khthn' ly thhw' bthrthyhyn ldwyd sh'wl w'mr dplshthy' 'yd' bh dthhw' thwqlth' lh wthhw' lh 'thlyh sh'wl w'mr
Saul said, I will give her to him, that she may be a snare to him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Therefore Saul said to David a second time, “You shall today be my son-in-law.”

ܘܦܩܕ ܫܐܘܠ ܠܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ ܕܐܡܪܘ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܒܪ ܐܝܫܝ ܗܐ ܨܒܐ ܒܟ ܡܠܟܐ ܘܟܠܗܘܢ ܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ ܪܚܡܘܟ ܗܫܐ ܗܘܝ ܚܬܢܐ ܠܡܠܟܐ
lmlk' khthn' hwy hsh' rkhmwk ebdwhy wklhwn mlk' bk tsb' h' 'yshy br ldwyd d'mrw lebdwhy sh'wl wpqd
Saul commanded his servants, “Talk with David secretly, and say, ‘Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. Now therefore be the king’s son-in-law.’”

ܘܐܡܪܘ ܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ ܕܫܐܘܠ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܡ̈ܠܐ ܗܠܝܢ ܘܐܡܪ ܕܘܝܕ ܒܨܝܪܐ ܗܝ ܗܕܐ ܒܥܝܢ̈ܝܟܘܢ ܕܐܗܘܐ ܚܬܢܐ ܠܡܠܟܐ ܘܐܢܐ ܓܒܪܐ ܐܢܐ ܡܣܟܢܐ ܘܡܨܥܪܐ

Saul’s servants spoke those words in the ears of David. David said, “Does it seem to you a light thing to be the king’s son-in-law, since I am a poor man and little known?”

ܘܚܘܝܘܗܝ ܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ ܠܫܐܘܠ ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܗ ܡ̈ܠܐ ܗܠܝܢ ܕܐܡܪ ܕܘܝܕ

The servants of Saul told him, saying, “David spoke like this.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܫܐܘܠ ܗܟܢܐ ܬܐܡܪܘܢ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܠܐ ܨܒ̇ܐ ܡܠܟܐ ܒܡܗܪܐ ܐܠܐ ܒܡܐܬܝܢ ܥܘܪ̈ܠܘܬܐ ܕܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܠܡܬܦܪܥܘ ܡܢ ܒ̈ܥܠܕܒܒܘܗܝ ܘܡܠܟܐ ܫܐܘܠ ܐܬܚܫܒ ܠܡܪܡܝܘܬܗ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܒܐܝܕܐ ܕܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ

Saul said, “Tell David, ‘The king desires no dowry except one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies.’” Now Saul thought he would make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

ܘܚܘܝܘܗܝ ܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ ܕܫܐܘܠ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܡ̈ܠܐ ܗܠܝܢ ܘܫܦܪ ܦܬܓܡܐ ܒܥܝܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܕܕܘܝܕ ܠܡܗܘܐ ܚܬܢܐ ܠܡܠܟܐ ܘܠܐ ܫܠܡܘ ܝܘܡ̈ܬܐ

When his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law. Before the deadline,

ܘܩܡ ܕܘܝܕ ܘܐܙܠ ܗܘ ܘܓܒܪ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܩ̇ܛܠ ܡܢ ܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܡܐ̈ܬܝܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܝܢ ܘܐܝܬܝ ܕܘܝܕ ܥܘܪ̈ܠܘܬܗܘܢ ܘܩ̇ܪܒ ܐ̈ܢܝܢ ܠܡܠܟܐ ܕܢܗܘܐ ܚܬܢܐ ܠܡܠܟܐ ܘܝܗܒ ܠܗ ܫܐܘܠ ܠܡܠܟܠ ܒܪܬܗ ܐܢܬܬܐ

David arose and went, he and his men, and killed two hundred men of the Philistines. Then David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might be the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him Michal his daughter as wife.

ܘܚܙܐ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܝܕܥ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܗܘܐ ܥܡ ܕܘܝܕ ܘܡܠܟܠ ܒܪܬ ܫܐܘܠ ܪܚܡܬܗ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܛܒ

Saul saw and knew that Yahweh was with David; and Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him.

ܘܐܘܣܦ ܬܘܒ ܫܐܘܠ ܠܡܕܚܠ ܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܕܘܝܕ ܘܗܘܐ ܫܐܘܠ ܒܥܠܕܒܒܐ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܝܘܡ̈ܬܐ

Saul was even more afraid of David; and Saul was David’s enemy continually.

ܘܢܦܩܘ ܪ̈ܘܪܒܢܐ ܕܦܠܫ̈ܬܝܐ ܘܗܘܐ ܒܙܒܢܐ ܕܢܦܩܘ ܐܨܠܚ ܕܘܝܕ ܡܢ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ ܕܫܐܘܠ ܘܐܬܝܩܪ ܫܡܗ ܛܒ

Then the princes of the Philistines went out; and as often as they went out, David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed.
